REVOLUTIONARY WAR

John was born in Norwalk, CT to Nathaniel Hayes & Elizabeth Holmes Hayes. John was a blacksmith by trade. As he worked on the Hudson River Chain, he probably worked for Sterling Iron Works, which was owned by Peter Townsend - cousin of Culper Spy Ring member Robert Townsend. The company was most famous for forging the Hudson River Chain constructed during the American Revolutionary War across the Hudson River as defenses to prevent British naval vessels from sailing upriver and to protect the fort at West Point.

While John was still in his apprenticeship, he ran away to join Continental Forces under George Washington at the time when the army occupied Westchester and he was present at the execution of Major John Andre. He served six months under General Washington before his father came to claim him on account of his age - he was 15 years old!

John later joined the local militia and served for several years. He married Olive Hine in 1790 and had eight children.
