Verna Lee Allen, 89, died Dec. 24, 2011, peacefully in the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. Services will be Wednesday, Dec. 28, at McCoy Funeral Home, 401 East 3rd in Sweetwater, with Ron McElyea officiating.
Burial will follow at the Nolan Cemetery in Nolan, TX.
Verna Hamrick was born on March 8, 1922, in Sweetwater, Texas. She was the middle of three children, one older brother, J.J. and younger sister Irene all raised in Clyde, TX. She married James T. (J.T.) Allen on March 16, 1941 in Baird, TX.
After World War II, Verna and J.T. made their home in Sweetwater, TX. Verna was a bookkeeper at Harp Music Company until her retirement in 1972. Verna was also a professional artist selling various paintings to people all over the state of Texas.
In their spare time, Verna and J.T. traveled the world. Her favorite traveling memories included more than 60 cruises. She enjoyed sewing, baking and working on various projects for her friends and family.
Verna was the mother of two children. One son, James Ronald, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband of 70 years, J.T., one daughter, Jerri Allen McElyea and her husband, Ron of Abilene and four grandchildren, Robin Allen Fraley and her husband Billy, Jason Allen, Amber McElyea Peck and her husband, Frank, Cameron McElyea and his wife, Tonya and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Zana Anderson, J.T. Lambert, Billy Fraley, Derrick Fraley, Cameron McElyea and Frank Peck. Two honorary pallbearers are Jason Allen and Mel Clapper.
Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Dec. 27, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the McCoy Funeral Home.
