John Christian Overholtzer was born October 17, 1867 in Little York, Warren County, Illinois. His parents were Samuel S. and Harriet (Jones) Overholtzer. When he was three years old, his parents left Illinois and moved to Decatur County, Iowa where he grew to manhood.
John C. Overholtzer married Eunice L. Varner February 15, 1899 in Franklin, Decatur County, Iowa. They had children Carrie Marie, Lynn Varner, Ina Gladys and Ruth Lorene.
John bought a portion of his father’s farm and this was the family home until retirement when he and Eunice moved to Osceola, Iowa, and made their home with their daughter Ruth.
County politics was a special interest of John’s and he served several years on the Decatur County Board of Supervisors.
The family church was Fairview Methodist in Franklin Township, Decatur County, Iowa.
