John was the only child of Winfield S. McCart and Ada A Henderson. His mother likely died after childbirth.

John was living in Eastport, Maine in the 1900 and 1910 Census records with his father Winfield Scott McCart and widowed grandmother Sophia Corbett McCart.


In August on 1918, John was a student at the University of Maine and enlisted in WW I. He was a 2nd LT. D. B. C Co. 2 Tng B. John was Honorable Discharged on Sept. 17, 1919 from Fort Devens.


After the War, John continued to live with his father in Eastport, and a step-mother Nellie and step-brother Stanley, as well as his Uncle John, for whom he was most likely named.


John married Gertrude M. "Goldie" Sprague in Eastport, Maine on July, 12, 1937. In 1940, they were living in Bowdoinham, Maine, where he was Principal at the local High School.
