Descendant of Mayflower Pilgrim GEORGE SOULE

Eunice was the daughter of Nathan Barber (1732-1816) and Thankful Maxson (1737-1806).

Her father served in the Revolutionary War and was the great-great-grandson of George SOULE, a Mayflower pilgrim, manservant to Edward Winslow, and signer of the Mayflower Compact [Elizabeth F. Church, Some descendants of Moses Barber of Kingstowne, Rhode Island Genealogical Register, Vol. 4, p. 97-104, 222-229, 1981; Anne Borden Harding, Mayflower families through five generations, Vol. 3, George Soule, General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1980].

Her parents are buried at the Barber Ground, now Case CHAPMAN farm, Westerly, Rhode Island [Rev. Frederic Denison, A.M., Westerly (Rhode Island) and its witnesses, 1626-1876, Providence, p. 276, 1878].

Eunice was born at Hopkinton, Rhode Island, on 22 July 1769.

Eunice married Thomas DUNBAR at Westerly on 29 August 1784 in a wedding officiated by Elder Isiah WILCOX [A certified copy of their marriage record, dated 29 August 1843, is included in his Revolutionary War Pension Application, p. 560].

Thomas had served in the Revolutionary War helping to interdict British supply lines to New York City and on coast watch duty in the Westerly vicinity.

Eunice and Thomas raised a large family at Westerly where Thomas was a ship's master.

Move to Connecticut by 1816

About 1816 they moved to Connecticut, where Eunice was mentioned in her father's will dated 15 March 1816. Her father's probate file, proved 6 June 1816, lists Eunice and Thomas as residents of Colchester, Connecticut [Rhode Island Genealogical Register, July 1986, p. 50]. They were enumerated at Hartland, Connecticut, in the 1820 U.S. Census.

Move to Massachusetts

In the 1820s they moved to West Springfield, Massachusetts, and then to Chester where they were enumerated in the 1830 Federal Census [see also His pension application].

Thomas's pension application, dated 4 September 1832 lists him as a resident of Chester. Thomas died and was buried there several years later. In her affidavit dated 3 August 1843, Eunice, aged 76 years, testified that Thomas died 12 December 1839 at Blandford, not far from Chester. At the time of his death, Thomas received an annual pension of $80 for his service during the Revolutionary War.

In November 1843 Eunice resided at Chester, with one of her sons (Thomas) who was master of a vessel for several years. She removed shortly after 1843 to Blandford; her pension application dated 2 February 1848 indicates that she had been a resident of Blandford for 4 years.

Eunice was enumerated in the 1850 Federal Census with her grandson Benjamin PENDLETON, and his family at Russell, Massachusetts . This PENDLETON family removed to Chester, where they were enumerated in the 1855 Massachusetts State Census, but Eunice was not enumerated with them. In an affidavit for an application for bounty land, dated 11 May 1855, Eunice, aged 85, is identified as a resident of Blandford.

Eunice died at Blandford on 31 January 1857; and was buried in the tiny two-person Dunbar Cemetery, Smithies Road, Chester, Massachusetts next to her husband [James N. Arnold, R.I. Vital Records, Vol. 5, Part ?, Hopkinton, p. 31, 1894; Blandford VR, Deaths; Francis H. O'Leary, Gravestone Inscriptions for Chester, Massachusetts, 1761-1981, p. 29, Agawam, Massachusetts, 1983].
