"Richard was in the Civil War. He was a Private in Company K, 50th Regiment Illinois. His Company was in Sherman's "March to the Sea". Richard Hammond did not want to fight in the Civil War. It was legal to pay someone to take your place in those days so he paid a man to go in for him. The man ran off with the money so Richard had to go to war anyway. He enlisted October 4, 1864 and was mustered out July 13, 1865."

Special thanks to Mike and Diane Kucenski for the photos and bio information.
