The funeral for Gracie B. "Toot" Draper Scales Clay, 88, of 506 Airview Drive, Martinsville, who died Dec. 14, 2011, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Antioch Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The Rev. Junior Wimbush will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church for one hour before the service Monday and other times at the home of a daughter, Leatrice "Jean" Johnson, 522 Airview Drive, Martinsville.
She was born Oct. 22, 1923, in Henry County, to Henry Clay Draper and Henrietta Hayes Draper. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, James W. Scales and Homer Clay; a daughter, Rita Johnson; four sisters, Sara Lou Draper, Josephine Draper, Henrietta Draper and Margaret D. Watkins; and two brothers, Leonard Draper and Henry Clay Draper.
She retired from Hooker Furniture after 42 years of service, was a member of Carver Ruritan Club and Martinsville Senior Citizens, and was a former member of the Horsepasture Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She also was a member of Antioch Christian Church (DOC), where she was in the Christian Women's Fellowship and choir and was an usher.
Surviving, in addition to her daughter Leatrice Johnson, are three daughters, Henrietta "Hinkey" Baker of Martinsville, Barbara Jean Clay of Cleveland, Ohio, and Brenda Brown of Oxon Hill, Md.; four sons, Abe Draper of Martinsville and David Clay, Thomas Clay and Robert "Ricky" Clay, all of South Boston; two sisters, Lucy Millner and Patty Preston, both of Martinsville; a brother, David Draper of Fieldale; 23 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
