Richard "Dick" Gilson died November 19, 2011 in Muskogee, OK.
Dick was born on Junw 24, 1929 to Charles Henry and Ruth Knapp Gilson. He grew up in Crofton and Omaha, Ne. He left the area after joining the Navy at the end of WW II. He served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the "Bay of Pigs" and retired with the rank of Senior Chief.
In 1950, while serving in Long Beach, CA, he met Gloria Mae Reeves from Altamont, KS. They were married December 27, 1951 in Fort Smith, AK. Shortly after their wedding he left the Navy and returned to Crofton and worked in construction where he assisted in the construction of both the Ft. Randall and Gavins Point Dams.
In 1953 he rejoined the Navy, raised four children and retired in 1969 and returned to Crofton to open a heating and air conditioning company. In 1970 he was recruited to start the 1880 Train in Hill City, SD, which he ran for a couple of years until the sea once again called him. He then joined the Military Sealift Command, traveling the world for another 11 years.
After his second retirement he continued his nomatic lifestyle by extensively traveling the USA with Gloria in a travel trailor until health issues required a more stable living arrangements. They moved to Yankton for a few years and then moved to Muskogee for warmer weather in 201. He was a member of numerous Masonic aand military organizations and will be remembered for his great sense of humor, practical jokes and generous heart.
He was preceeded in death by his parents, 2 sisters: Eileen Davidson, Frances Burkett; a grandson, Charles Henry Gilson III.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years;) children Charles (Charlii)Gilson, Yankton, Junior (Sandy), Bethesda, MD, Gloria "Diana" (James) Deilbert, Charleston, SC, Sherman "Peewee" (Trudi)Gilson, Yankton; six grandchildren; Four step granschildren, nine great grandchildren ; five step great grandchildren; a sister Mary Jane Buschelman, formerly of Forcyce; and numerous nieces and nephews.
