AUBURN -- Mary Elizabeth Vanier, 78, of Auburn, passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at d'Youville Pavilion in Lewiston.
She was born in Portland on Feb. 18, 1933, the daughter of the late Albert and Doris (Dunham) Fickett. Mary attended Portland schools and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1951. She married Jorgen 'Mike' C. Mikkelsen on June 23, 1951. She later married Arthur 'Jack' J. Vanier Jr. on July 25, 1958, and he predeceased her in 1995.
Mary was active in St. Philips Church in Auburn and was on the board of directors for 'RAFTS,' Relatives and Friends Together for Support. She enjoyed being a homemaker and raising children along with cooking, camping and being out in nature.
She is survived by her two children, Paul S. Mikkelsen of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Kathleen D. Mikkelsen of Portland; her brothers, John Fickett of Portland, and Richard Fickett of Gorham; one sister-in-law, Marilyn Vanier of Leesburg, Fla.; as well as several nieces and nephews. Mary was also predeceased by her daughter, Linda Jo Mikkelsen; three brothers, Albert Jr., Kenneth and Donald; as well as a sister-in-law, Flosse Fickett.
Due to a family emergency please note the service change: Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 10, 2011, from 2-4 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 4 p.m., at The Fortin Group/Auburn. Internment will be held in the spring. A service of The Fortin Group/Plummer & Merrill Funeral Home, Cremation and Monument Services, 217 Turner St., Auburn.
