Howard Valentine

R. Howard Valentine, 78, Montesano native and well-known logging operator, died last Thursday afternoon in an Aberdeen hospital. Born in the lower Wynooche Valley on February 25, 1900, he was the son of William S. and Jennie Valentine, early day settlers of the valley. On October 15, 1918, he married Alice A. Simons.

Mr. Valentine, who in the early days logged for the Wynooche, Schafer Bros. and Simpson timber companies, established the family concern of R. H. Valentine Logging in 1946. This logging operation was moved to Coffman Cove, Alaska in 1947. In 1972, he retired, turning the business over to his family and moving back to Montesano. He was a member of the Wynooche Valley Grange.

Survivors besides his widow, Alice, at the family home, include three sons, Ralph C. of Montesano and Karl W. and Michael L., both of Coffman Cove, three daughters, Kathryn (Mrs. James) Riley of Kanoche, Oahu, Hawaii, Maxine (Mrs. John) Isaacson of Montesano and Donna (Mrs. Fred) Martin of Tacoma; three brothers, Don L. and Crosby Valentine, both of Montesano, and Clyde W. Valentine of Livermore Falls, Maine; two sisters, Flo (Mrs. Virgil) Ninemire of Montesano and Blanche (Mrs. Harry) Swenson of Malone, 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives.

Services were held Monday in Montesano's Church of God, under the direction of Whiteside Chapel and with the Rev. Ben Chandler officiating. Interment followed in the Wynooche Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Holcombe, James Briscoe, John Tagman, Morris Dagnen, Oliver Fry and Loren Crass; honorary pallbearers were Emery Peterson, Millard Briscoe, Frank Ziegler, Dale Willis, Forth Twidwell, Leagen Hampton, Walter Crass and ? Widener. The family's favorite benevolences are the Montesano Fire Department and the Heart Fund.
