Julia Ann Avery was born Sept 9, 1824 in Tioga County, PA (according to her death record and grave stone) to Benjamin Green Avery and Priscilla (Swan) Avery. Julia's mother died before 1829. Her father Benjamin then married Lucretia A. Ellis in 1829. Julia married Richard Spencer Ellis in 1839 (or possibly 1840/41--according to the 1900 census). They resided in Bell Township and had seven children. In June 1870 census they were living in Eagle Point, Chippewa, Wisconsin. They were back in Bell Township by the late 1870's. Several of Richard and Julia's sons were in the Civil War: Horace A. (wounded twice, received congressional medal for bravery), Asaph A. (died of TB contracted in the army), John (killed at Fort Stevens-1864). Julia's youngest child, DeRoy, cared for her until her death in 1902.

Julia's step mother, Lucretia Ellis, was also the half sister of her father-in-law Asaph Ellis. Asaph's mother and Lucretia's mother were sisters. Asaph and Lucretia had the same father (Deacon Richard Ellis 1760-1841).
