He taught and coached at Jesup High School before entering the Medical College of Georgia. Following graduation and an internship, he practiced General Medicine in Jesup for ten years. Then after a radiology residency, he was the Wayne Memorial Hospital Radiologist for twenty years. He was a member of his Local, District, State and National Associations. Lanier was also a member of Jesup First United Methodist Church and had been a member and officer of numerous civic and community organizations.
His wife of 61 years, Evelyn Warren Harrell preceded him in death along with their daughter, Charlotte Ellen Harrell.
Survivors are two sons, Michael L. (Karen) Harrell of Jesup and Roy (Lisa Tumarkin) Harrell of Gainesville, Fla.; 6 grandchildren, Michael L., Jr. (Susan) Harrell, Rebecca (George) Curtis, Hannah Elizabeth Harrell (Jason) Martin, Katherine Berlin Harrell and Lucas Welch (Marcelle) Harrell; step-granddaughters, Tess Tumarkin and Rachel Brannen; great grandchildren, Miranda and Malcolm Curtis, Mollie Grace and Miles Martin, Sam, Ben and Harper Harrell; step great-grandchildren, Madison (Shaun) Fu and Mary Jane Laroche.
Funeral services will be 2 PM Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at Jesup First Methodist Church with Pastor Rebecca Duke-Barton and Dink NeSmith officiating. Interment will follow in the Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Downie and Johnny Wolfe, Tom Ritch, Herschel Daniel, John Benner, Reed Brown, Lindsay Walker, Mark Miller, Gary Peel, Mark McGregor, Jiggs Riggins and Fred Bishop.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jesup First United Methodist Church, 205 E. Cherry Street, Jesup, GA 31546.
