Alfred Jay was born in Bethgar Terrace Ebbow Vale Wales, son of William and Elizabeth. His parents went to Wales frquently for work in the mines and to stay with family. He was naturalized on July 26, 1895 and was director of the Utica Conservatory of Music.

He married Jane Wood about 1895 and they had five children: Elizabeth Maud, Alfred Sidney, Emma Mae, Edward Sardis and William George.
