Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served during the Civil War as a Private in the Chicago Mercantile Battery, Illinois Volunteer Light Artillery. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 22, 1863. His citation reads "Carried with others by hand a cannon up to and fired it through an embrasure of the enemy's works". His Medal was awarded to him on December 21, 1894.
