Rhoda Gazaway Howse was the daughter of Francis and Mary Minter Gazaway. Rhoda was born in Dekalb County, Georgia and lived in Red Oak, Campbell County, Georgia until she married Thomas Abner Howse on December 13, 1891.

Thomas and his children by his first wife, Josephine Ophelia Vaughn moved via Wagon to Cullman County, Alabama arriving December 24, 1897.

During this time Rhoda and Thomas' daughter Mary died in 1897.

Rhoda was expecting William Marion Howse, so she stayed in Red Oak until after his birth in February 1898, She moved with their children via train to Cullman County, Alabama. They lived first at Simcoe and then Abner purchased land by the Fairview to Holly Pond Road.

Thomas and Rhoda had the following children:Robert, Lawrence, Mary, William, Lora and Lee.
