John Samuel Ragsdale volunteered for service in the Confederate States Army and enlisted on July 20, 1861 at the age of 16. He enlisted with his older brother William Millard Ragsdale. He served in Company "K" of Orr's Regiment, 1st South Carolina Rifles. He served in Stonewall Jackson's Army and in A.P. Hill's Army. He was captured at Petersburg, Virginia on April 3rd, 1865. He was imprisoned at Hart Island POW Camp in New York. On on June 16, 1865, He took the Oath of Alliance and was released from the Camp.
He was 6'1" with fair complexion, light hair and blue eyes.
