Son of James Elvin (1823-1851)(who died seven days after his son's birth from pneumonia as a result of climbing a flagpole in frigid weather to celebrate) and Eliza Vashti Athway of Lincolnshire, England.
Eliza was the daughter of John Athway and Mary Armstrong of Louth,Lincolnshire,England and the sister of Mary Foster who married Bartholomew White, thereby establishing the close relationship between the Elvin and White families in the United States.

settled in Pendleton, Indiana-moved to Anderson, Indiana in 1889.

James married second Charlotte Cottrell, widow of Bartholomew White Jr. on 11 November 1899 in Madison County,Indiana. They had a son, Roy H. who died after 6 days.
