Married to Isabella Layton on September 17, 1838 in Fredericksburg, VA., he was a Coachmaker; Director, Fredericksburg Building Fund Association; member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Myrtle Lodge (officer) in 1854; Vigilance Committee member in 1860.
On 5/20/1864 in Fredericksburg, he and 59 other Fredericksburg area citizens were arrested and sent to Ft. Delaware by the U.S. Army and held hostage for the return of 60 Federal troops who had been arrested by civilian authorities as unorderly, armed stragglers. The exchange was finalized a few months later.
