Esther Sarah Basman, 103, of Charleston departed this Earth with grace and dignity, surrounded by her loving family, as she wished, in her home that she built and lived in for the past 61 years.

Born March 15, 1908, in Clarksburg, she was the daughter of the late William and Rebecca Fox Evnitz. Esther had a well-traveled and interesting life. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Jack Basman , M.D., and one brother, Leo Evnitz.

Esther was a resident of Charleston for 93 years and a 1927 graduate of Charleston High School. She was a member of the Temple B'nai Israel. Esther was a member of Hadassah and the Temple Sisterhood.

She was a caring person who valued volunteerism as evidenced by her many volunteer jobs including, but not limited to, Charleston Memorial Hospital and delivering Meals-on-Wheels at the age of 97. Although she drove until the age of 96, she was a pillar of stamina and health by often times choosing to walk instead of drive.

Esther was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She continued to do crewel and embroidery pictures for her family and close friends until recently at the age of 102. Always refined and timeless, Esther wore her high heel shoes and flawlessly took care of herself and her home until the end. She loved to read and garden flowers. She was a role model who was strong, proud, kind and, most importantly, modest.

Survivors include her daughters, Dr. Judith VanGinkle and husband, David, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Lynn Gottlob and husband, Milford, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Robin Durrett of Beckley. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jennifer Mooney and husband, Don, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Leigh Levy and husband, John, of Chicago, Ill., Louise Cullen and husband, Patrick, of Twinsburg, Ohio, Stephanie Ono and husband, Yugi, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Adam Gottlob and wife, Tricia, of Cleveland, Ohio, Rebecca Cottle-Makhene and husband, Mmotsa, of Bristow, Va., Paul Cottle and wife, Megan, of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and Sarah Durrett of Beckley. Her great-grandchildren include Caroline and Nora Mooney of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jessica and Jack Cullen of Twinsburg, Ohio, and Andrew and Elijah Makhene of Bristow, Va. She is also survived by her niece, Gail Gross and husband, David, and children, Duffy, Jeff and Lee; niece, Mary Shine, husband, Robbie, and children, Daniel and Sara; and nephew, John Gordon.

A special thanks for their dedication and compassion goes to Dr. Greg Rosencrance and Igy and the girls, Sam Argo, and to neighbor and longtime friend, Susan Lawrence.

Private family graveside services will be conducted in the Spring Hill Cemetery at 11 a.m. Sunday, August 14, with Rabbi James D. Cohn officiating.

In lieu of flowers, we are grateful for donations made to the Jack Basman Nursing Scholarship Fund, c/o Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, 1600 Huntington Square, 900 Lee St. E., Charleston, WV 25301, email www.tgkvf.org
