Born in Virgina. Moved to Lincoln County, Kentucky in the 1850s married Susan Dawes. During the Civil War he was first a Lt. in the 3rd Kentucky Infantry (US). Shortly after enlisting he joined Lincoln Lodge No. 60 Free and Accepted Masons on Sept. 11, 1861. Remarkable Col. Thomas Wilson Napier a Confederate officer allowed him to join. His masonic rites were conferred by Grand Master Landrum. During the war he was also chief of police for the city of Stanford and later in the war organized the Bridgewater Scouts which formed the nucleus for the Halls Gap Btn of which he was Major at the war's end. He was killed in downtown Stanford by Walter Saunders. This was probably due to his work as an agent for the Freedman's Bureau. His wife and family moved to Vernon County, MO afterwards. His older brother Augden Bridgewater stayed in the county and is buried at the Hustonville Cemetery. His younger brother John who was a Captain under James, moved to Johnson County, MO. He is buried in the Liberty Cemetery in Warrensburg, Mo.
