Mary was born January 29, 1799 in Adams (now Brown) County, Ohio, to Major Anthony Franklin and Polly Nelson, daughter of Captain Nelson, then of Kentucky, but formerly of Virginia.

She married Eli Jarnagin July 11, 1816 in Highland County, Ohio. Their first eleven children were born in Ohio and In 1837 they moved to Randolph County, Indiana, where they were among the first white settlers. Three more children were born between 1839 and 1844. Eli died in 1876 and Mary, age 92, died January 6, 1891 in the home of her son-in-law, Henry Miller of Olive Branch community. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and later of the United Brethren Church. Her funeral was held at Zion Church, with burial at Fairview Cemetery, Randolph Co., Ohio.

Eli Jarnagin and Mary Franklin Jarnagin had fourteen children, twelve of whom lived to adulthood: 1.) Infant Jarnagin 2.) Infant Jarnagin 3.) Levi, born 1820 4.) Anthony W. 5.) Benjamin Franklin born 1822 served in 151st Regiment, Indiana Infantry 6.) John Wesley born 1824, died 1910 7.) Sarah E. (Jarnagin) Eaton born 1826 d. 1873 in Osage, Iowa 8.) Jasper F. born 1829 9.) George Washington born 1831, died 1908 in Panora, Iowa. Served in the Mexican War 10.) Martha J. (Jarnagin) Keener born 1833 11.) Thomas Wilkerson born 1836 12.) Mariah "Maria" (Jarnagin) Miller born 1839 13.) Mary Ann (Jarnagin) Bales born 1842 14.) Eli, Jr. born 1844, died 1867 in Indiana. He was wounded while a soldier in the Civil War.
