James married five times, all in Pike County, AL. His wives and dates of marriage are:

Margaret A. Beck on 25 Feb 1880
Frances Beck on 28 June 1884
Genie Fowler on 26 Nov 1885
Frances Pickens "Pinkie" Mills on 11 Sep 1892
Martha C. McLeod on 6 Apr 1908

The 1910 census shows James & Martha living in the Orion section of Pike County, AL. It indicates that James has been married 5 times. The census taker also took "Mother of how many children info" on males as well as females. The record shows that James had "borne" 7 children, and 2 were living - one was Joseph, son of Genie, and the other was Clevy. Presumably his other wives died during or due to childbirth but the five children who died are unknown, as are his first three wives' dates of death. [Per the census, it was Martha's first marriage, and she had borne 1 child, Clevy, who was living.]

James & Martha were living in the Dozier/Searight section of Crenshaw County, AL according to the 1930 census. He died there soon after the census was taken. The 1900 census gives his birth date as Apr 1860; his AL death record indicates he was born 8 Dec 1858 and was 71 years, 4 months, and 11 days old when he died. (The 1930 census indicated he was 71 years old so the death record info may be correct.) Buried at Elam in an unmarked grave.
