He was the son of Joseph and Agnes (Patterson) Allen.
He married (1) Mary A. Haynes on January 7, 1837 in Elbert County, Georgia. Their children were: Sarah L. E., Mary Emma, Thomas J., Martha C., James Monroe, Nancy Caroline, Henry C., William E. and Eliza Frances Allen.

He married (2) Margaret Estes on August 1, 1858 in Hart County, Georgia and they had two sons, Francis Marion and Reuben Estes Allen.

He married (3) Elizabeth Jane Estes on February 22, 1863 in Hart County, Georgia. No children were born to this union.
