Ill for Year, Santa Monica Man Succumbs
William T. Gillis, Prominent in California Developments and Interested in Many Enterprises, Will Be Buried in Los Angeles
SANTA MONICA, - Dec. 29. – After an illness of one year, William T. Gillis died this morning at his home on San Vicente boulevard, in the Palisades. During the last few weeks the stricken man had been failing rapidly and his end was not unexpected. Deceased was born in Moncton, N.B., and spent the early years of his life at Pictou, N.S. He came to Santa Monica in 1887 and was engaged in the drug business here for a number of years, removing for a time to Redlands. After a residence of a few years in the interior he returned to this city in 1901 and has since made his home here, taking an active part in the business enterprises with which he was connected and in the development of the city.
He was interested in the Santa Monica Land & Water Company, and was president of that organization at the time of his death.
He was active in the development of Sawtelle, having been connected with the management of the Pacific Land Company. He assisted in the promotion of the Palisades, and was a member of the Santa Monica Investment Company, was one of the original promoters of the Los Angeles Pressed Brick Manufacturing Company, was interested in the Southwest Warehouse Company, and had been for a number of years identified with the Bank of Santa Monica.
He was instrumental in the organization of the local lodge of Elks and served as its first Exalted Ruler. He was also a Mason, a Shriner and a Knight Templar.
He is survived by a widow, one son, Robert, aged 10 years, and two step-children, Myrtle and Earl Nash. Robert C. Gillis, of Los Angeles and Santa Monica, is a brother of deceased.
The funeral, which will be private, will be held at his late residence at 10:30 tomorrow morning. The interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Los Angeles.

HOLD FUNERAL SERVICES
SANTA MONICA, Dec. 30.- Brief funeral services were held over the remains of the late W. T. Gillis at the family home at Fourth street and San Vicente boulevard today. The Rev. W. H. Cornett officiated. The following close business associates were pallbearers: General Sherman, H. M. Mabery, Roy Jones, Dr. P. S. Lindsey, C. L. Bundy and J. J. Davis. A funeral car over the Los Angeles Pacific carried the funeral party to Rosedale cemetery, Los Angeles, where interment was made.
