James' parents were William Byron Mikell and Mary Jane Wise Mikell. Mary Jane was his father's second wife. (His first was Agnes T. Groover).
His step-brothers from that first marriage were: David B. 1876 and Walter C. 1878.
His full siblings were: Mellie McDonald, Robenia, William B. Jr., Anna and an unamed infant girl.

Robenia and her brother, James C., both died when they were 7 yrs. old and their sister as a newborn. Their parents later moved to Savannah, Ga but are buried at Upper Black Creek Church Cemetery.
