Major Finis E. Williams was a retired merchant of Carthage, Missouri residing on route 3 Carthage. He had been a member of the Light Guard and Missouri Militia. He had taken part in a large encampment in Jasper county dubbed "Camp Caffee" after it's leader, Col. William K. Caffee.

an excerpt from the July 21, 1892 Carthage Press reporting on the activity of the camp. IT READS:

HOW THEY DRILL
The Regiment Divided into Two Battalions - Majors Commanding.


The seven companies composing the Second Regiment, now in camp, have been divided off into battalions by the commanding officer as follows:
Butler, Nevada and Sedalia compose the first battalion with Maj. Harry Mitchell of Nevada, commanding and Capt. C. O. Harrington, Carthage, adjutant. The second battalion is made up of Springfield, Joplin, Pierce City and Carthage. Major Williams, of Joplin, commands this battalion with Capt. J. W. Halliburton, adjutant. These officers are experienced men and are well up in military tactics and discipline. The control their men in an admirable manner, and are the subject of many favorable comments.

Census 1870, enumerated on 13th day of July, 1870 reported that James Williams, age 53, was born in Alabama and was farming in the Benton Twp of Polk county, MO.
Also reported in the home was his wife Mahala, 49, and known children listed as

Per U.S. 1930 Census Finis Williams was married to Sally C. Williams. They resided in Lagoon, Pawnee, Oklahoma at the time of the census. Finis is listed as a farmer.

Per Conway Baptist Cemetery listing 1980: Finis Ewing Williams is not listed as being buried there, even though his death certificate lists him as being placed there. His 1st spouse is listed as: WILLIAMS, Anna Wfe of F.E.17 July 1888 - 11 Nov 1915 ROW 13. Also note that Anna was born in 1869. Anna's death certificate and the 1900 U.S. Census gives her correct birthdate as 17 Jul 1869. Anna's stone is incorrect.
