John joined the US Army on 16 September 1940 in Malta, MT – initially a member of Montana National Guard's 116th Quartermaster Regiment. He went on to make it a career, ultimately retiring from the Army as a Chief Warrant Officer 4, having served his country during World War-II, Korea, & Viet Nam before retiring and then settling in Nebraska.
On 9 September 1942, John Mathias married Lucille M. Kaiser at Fort Lewis, WA (US Army base located just south of Tacoma); he was age 30, she was 23. Born 23 November 1918 in Baker, MT, she was the third of seven children born to Frank E. & Anna M. Kaiser.
