Professional Football Player. For eight seasons (1954 to 1961), he played at the defensive back and halfback positions in the National Football League with the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, Washington Redskins and New York Giants. Born William David Stits, he attended Nathaniel Narbonne High School (California) and played collegiate football at UCLA. Selected by Detroit during the 4th round of the 1954 NFL Draft, Stits was an immediate contributor to the Lions' squad which appeared in the 1954 NFL Championship Game, as he earned Pro-Bowl honors that year. He appeared in 92 regular season games and concluded his career as a member of the Giants' team which appeared in the 1961 NFL Title Game. Following his football career, Stits worked in the private sector. He died of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
