Simon F. O'Keefe, member of one of Taunton's oldest families, died at the Victoria Hospital, Miami, Florida Tuesday night following a short illness. His home was at 258 Somerset Avenue this city.
The day following Christmas in 1931, Mr. O'Keefe with his daughter Miss Ella V. O'Keefe left Taunton for Florida to pass the winter. He was taken ill with pneumonia about 10 days ago and failed to recover. He was in his 84th year.
Mr. O'Keefe was born in this city, a son of Simon and Mary O'Keefe. Unlike his two brothers David and John, who followed the sea and later became distinguished captains of Taunton vessels, Simon learned the trade of a machinist at the Mason Machine Works.
Through a service which lasted for 50 years with the company for which he first went to work, Mr. O'Keefe became a most trusted and esteemed employee of the Mason Machine Works. He was recognized as one of the most capable and brilliant men in his line, and for that reason was entrusted with the responsibility of superintending the installation of Mason Machine Work's products.
In this work, Mr. O'Keefe became well known throughout the southern states where he installed machinery for the Taunton company. When the Mason Machine Works took over the Campbell Press work, Mr. O'Keefe was placed in charge of installing presses throughout the United States. Mr. O'Keefe was a close friend of the late Colonel Frederick Mason, son of the founder of the Mason Machine Works, and was well acquainted with William Mason, the founder. He retired from the employ of the Mason Machine Works about 12 years ago.
Mr. O'Keefe's brothers, David and John and the latter's four sons, were masters of Taunton vessels for many years and were renowned as able and experienced men in the sea-faring trade of Taunton's former days. The deceased is survived by three daughters, Ella V. O'Keefe and Mrs. Lena M. McGuire who were with him at the time of his passing; and Mrs. Louise A. Mullins, all of Taunton; three sons, Dr. Clarence S. O'Keefe, Taunton dentist, William F. of Boston, who is in the secret service of the United States, and Henry Lester of the New York firm of O'Keefe, Buhl and Peer, jewelers findings.
He is also survived by six grandchildren and two nephews, D. Gardner and J. Howard O'Keefe of the Taunton law firm of O'Keefe & O'Keefe.
The body will arrive in this city Thursday accompanied by the two daughters. In addition to the two daughters, Mrs. H. L. O'Keefe, daughter-in-law was with Mr. O'Keefe when he died.
