John F. Swaisgood, 76, of Ashland died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, at Kingston of Ashland.

He was born Nov. 16, 1935, in Lodi, the son of John Frank and Bessie Frances (née Mann) Swaisgood.

Mr. Swaisgood was a graduate of Kent State University. He had been employed as a teacher for 12 years; he taught science and math, working for Southeast schools in Portage County and Cloverleaf schools in Medina County. He also had been an apartment manager in the Kent area for 18 years, had worked for Morse Controls as a foreman for six years and most recently been a volunteer for Maple Grove Church of the Brethren and Mansfield Seventh-day Adventist Church. As a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, he enjoyed running a booth at the Richland County Fair for the church.

John was a member of the Kent State University rifle team and the Pershing rifle team. He enjoyed traveling and had visited 48 states.

On June 10, 1956, John married Anna Mae (Rush) Swaisgood, who survives. Other survivors include his daughter, Anita (Monte) Jackson of Roy, Utah; sons, Mark (Carmen) Swaisgood of Chesterland, Roger Swaisgood of Streetsboro, Roy (Diane) Swaisgood of Dillsburg, Pa., Michael (Debbie) Swaisgood of Goodrich, Mich.; along with his nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will take place 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, at Maple Grove Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Mark Swaisgood and the Rev. Bill Schaefer officiating. Burial will follow in Red Haw Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the church.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Seventh-day Adventist Church Health Ministries, 1040 W. Cook Road, Mansfield.
