Willard C. Baber
1919-2011

Willard C. Baber passed away on December 18, 2011.

He was born September 1, 1919 in Platte County, Mo., to Frank and Gladys (Collier) Baber.

Willard attended school in rural Missouri and graduated from Camden Point High School. He joined the Army in February, 1941, serving in the Infantry, and was honorably discharged in December, 1945.

He married Dorothy G. Rogers on September 26, 1945 in Atlanta, Ga. After his discharge from the Army, they settled in St. Joseph.

Following the war, Willard attended and taught at the Gard Business School. He worked at Iowa Missouri Walnut and Missouri Valley Walnut Companies as an accounting and office manager for 38 years.

Willard was a member of Deer Park United Methodist Church. He served his church as the financial secretary for many years.

After retirement, Willard volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, working on the first Habitat house. Over 20 years he helped build 43 houses and volunteered more than 2,000 hours. In September, 2008, he was awarded the very first Habitat "Golden Hammer" award for his services. He was very proud of and found great joy in his volunteer work. He also enjoyed gardening, walking, and the outdoors. His family was very important to him and he loved spending time with them.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl, Robert, and Harold; son, Steven Baber.

Survivors: his wife of 66 years, Dorothy; daughters, Lynn (Tom) Beggs and Pam (Jim) Gardner; sons, Mark (Nancy) Baber and John (Michelle) Baber; daughter-in-law, Debi Baber; brother, Bill (Mary) Baber; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment: Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory, where friends may call after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The family suggests memorial gifts to Hands of Hope Hospice or St. Joseph Habitat for Humanity.
