Cause of death: cardiac exhaustion

Smith was a veteran of the Civil War and served in the 15th New York Cavalry, Company H as a corporal. His military records show he is born in Tioga County, New York and is the son of Christopher and Mary Lott Barnes.

In 1850, Smith is a laborer.
In 1870, Smith is a railroad station agent.
In 1880, Smith is working in a telegraph office.

Smith is single during the 1870 US census however he and his wife Frances are married by the 1875 New York census. His and Frances' daughter Ada Frances is born about 1882 in Summit Station, New York, when Smith is ~43 and Frances is 39 years old.

Smith becomes a widower when his wife Frances dies in 1899. Ada is first married to William* Tritten (1889-1915) of North Bay, Oneida County, New York, on 02 Dec 1914. William is the manager of the North Bay limburger cheese factory and an accomplished cheesemaker but he becomes severely ill and dies three months after they are married. William is buried in the same section and lot as her Ada's mother. A few years later, Smith is buried with his wife and son-in-law. On 19 Jul 1919, Ada marries John Peter Fox (1880-1957) of Vienna, Oneida County, New York, in Vienna. They are found in the 1920 U.S. census but no further evidence of her has been found after January 1920. Information provided by Linda Fox Coe
