Civil War Figure. A prominent New York City Lawyer, during the Civil War he financed the equipment of a Union regiment. His diary kept at the time reveals his disdain toward slavery and its Southern proponents. During Reconstruction he commented on the dilemma posed by the issue of black suffrage and the difficulty of attracting Northern and European capital to the South. It was widely quoted in Ken Burns' landmark documentary "The Civil War."
