Raymond "Ray" List, 88 years old, of Granville, IA, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, IA.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, with Rev. Terry Roder, Rev. Richard Ball, and Msgr. Kenneth Seifried officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Granville. Visitation will be anytime after 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013. There will be a parish rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville.

Ray was born March 15, 1925, in rural Granville, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Henrich) List.

He was raised in the Granville area, graduating from Marcus High School in 1941. He attended Grand Island Business College in Grand Island, NE, for one year. He then returned to farm with his brother Melvin. He served in the U.S. Army from May 1945 until his honorable discharge in Oct. 1946.

On Sept. 6, 1950, he married Charmaine Von Arb at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, IA. Together they raised eleven children. The couple made their home on the family farm until moving to a farm southeast of Granville in 1953. They moved to Granville when they retired in 1989.

Ray was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church as well as the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight for several years. He was also a member of St. Joseph's Parish Board and the Spalding Catholic School Board. He was actively involved in the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, National Resources Conservation Service, Sioux County Soil and Water, and American Legion.

Ray enjoyed spending time with his family, farming, traveling, reading, following world events and news, quilting, cooking, playing cards, dancing, and spending time with his coffee friends. Ray and Char made many treasured quilts for their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Together they also prepared their famous butterhorns for all of the family holidays. Ray had a great sense of humor and loved to make people smile.

Ray is survived by: his wife of 63 years, Char of Granville; 11 children, Gary (Marilyn) List of Surrey, England, Glenn (Carole) List of Hospers, IA, Linda (Jerry) Langel of Alton, David (Jane) List of Granville, Dean (Gail) List of Omaha, NE, Lyle (Grace) List of Granville, Lori (David) Schmit of Sioux City, IA, Dale (Pam) List of Granville, Janet (Tim) Braun of Omaha, Nancy (Dan) Abraham of Lenexa, KS, and Kristi (Tod) Kellen of Omaha; 39 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Esther Reuter of Sauk Center, MN, Helen Brady of Marcus, IA, and Mildred (Eldon) Ruden of LeMars, IA; three brothers-in-law, Paul (Pauline) Von Arb of Granville, Ron (Sondra) Von Arb of Owatonna, MN, and Robert (Glenda) Von Arb of Hayward, WI; 10 sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Mousel of LeMars, Charlotte Von Arb of Spring, TX, Patricia Jungers of Hospers, IA, Margie Klein of Ashton, IA, Carolyn (Vern) Langenfeld of St. Louis, MO, Arlene (Leon) Schoo of St. Joseph, IA, Bev (Don) Delperdang of Remsen, Clarissa Doggett of Anchorage, AK, Ione (Harold) Naber of Granville, and Judy (Frank) Mousel of Dyersville, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ray was preceded in death by: his parents; one brother, Melvin (Florence) List; one sister, Edith (Gerald) Delperdang; nine brothers-in-law, Melvin Reuter, Gerald Delperdang, Lawrence Brady, Melvin (Lillian) Von Arb, Everett "Bud" Von Arb, Bernard Jungers, Leo Klein, Orville (Kay) Von Arb, and Bill Lazendorf; and one granddaughter, Ashley Schmit.

Casket bearers will be Ray's grandchildren, Christopher, Ryan, Jeremy, Matthew, Andy, and Kurt List.

Honorary bearers will be all of Ray's other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
