Nathaniel married Susan Peters McKissack on Sep. 2, 1841. They were the parents of four children.
Nat as he was called and his wife Susan set out to build a large home for there growing family.
The fourth in the line of Nathaniel Francis Cheairs dating back to the 1600's, Major Cheairs began building this wonderful old home in 1850 on land his father left him the home was finished 5 years before the War Between the States.
Nathaniel voted against seccission in Feb.-1861, but when the War started He immediatley took a roll in Leadership raising and equipping Spring Hill Infantry Company which would become 1st. Company E of the 3rd. Tennessee Volunter Infantry.
Leaving his wife and children behind , Major Cheairs would serve Bravely in The Confederate Army and in fact was caputured twice and inprisioned on Feb.-1862 at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor was treated well and released in the summer of 1863 but was again put in prision in Feb.-1864 and sent to Camp Chase Ohio and was held there for 12 months, being released in time to join Forrestt for his last fight at Selma Alabama in April 1865.
He returned home to his family at Rippavilla in May of 1865.
There were many letters that Major Nat Cheairs wrote his family during the war & also during his time as a prisoner of War they show much of what went on during this time.
Serveral years later the love of his life would pass away.
Nat traveled alot it was one of these trips with his Grand daughter Susie visiting Nat Hickney in December 1913 that Nathaniel suffered a Stroke at age 95 that left him Paralyzed on his left side.
Nat was carried by Train to the home of Jennie below Waco that he appeared to rally.
The end came on January 2, 1914.
Nat's son-in law Dr. J.M. Moore brought his body back to Tennessee and the Major was buried next to his wife Susan at Rose Hill Cemetery in Columbia Tenn.
There are many Confederate Solders that servered with Nat buried near by many names are Unknow.
Nathaniel was of the Methodist Faith and was a Mason.

It was our honor to get to visit this old Cemetery where many Civil War Soldiers are buried including my Cousin Nathaniel.
