Born in Indianapolis, Ind., to Henry and NeWaTa Ford, Bill later relocated with the family to John Day, Ore., where he played football, basketball and track. He had one sister, Sharon. After graduation he went to Stanford University, receiving his bachelor's degree in economics in 1953. In 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed out of Hawaii on the U.S.S. O'Bannon, where he served as Asst. Chief Engineer. In 1957, he married Mary Alice Hood. They had three children and later divorced. In 1983, he married Jan. His first job was working in his father's lumber mill in John Day. Upon returning from the Navy, he started his lumber sales career with Boise Cascade, became sales manager with DAW and eventually retired from Crown Pacific. Bill also enjoyed officiating high school and small college football. Bill and Jan were avid supporters of the Oregon Symphony. Elder Hostels featuring music was a favorite travel destination. Bill never missed watching an Indy 500, was an enthusiastic golfer and ran several sub 3-hour marathons. In retirement, he was an active member of the Claremont Adult Community where he participated in various organizations including serving as President of the Civic Board. Survivors include his wife, Jan; daughter, Sherilyn Lawson (Bruce); sons, Thomas Ford and John Ford (Audrey); stepdaughter, Ami Sage; stepson, Chris Jones; niece, Holly Smith; nephew, J.T. Haglund; and five grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at Serenity Hospice and Comfort Keepers for their caring support. A celebration of life and brunch will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, at the Claremont Club House, 15800 N.W. Country Club Drive, Portland, OR 97229.
