Scientist, Businessman A horticultural scientist, his internationally famous Vick Park Nursery was second only in the region to the Ellwanger and Barry Company and was one of the prime reasons for Rochester's becoming known as "The Flower City", a nickname by which it is still known. He left his close friend Charles Dickens behind in England to emigrate to the United in 1859, and founded his company in 1866. He was a pioneer in the seed catalog business, initially gathering the seeds by hand from his own flower-planted acreage, and the Vick Seed Company was a strong going concern for many decades, only recently bought out by Burpee. He specialized in peonies, and introduced several new peony strains to America.
