Major League Baseball Player. Born in Guilford, North Carolina, he was a right handed pitcher making his debut at age nineteen with the Cleveland Indians on September 9, 1927. For fifteen seasons, he played with the Cleveland Indians (1927-33), Boston Red Sox (1934-37), Washington Senators in 1938, New York Yankees in 1939, Brooklyn Dodgers in 1940 and Boston Braves in 1941. In 1931, he pitched a no-hitter and was selected to the All-Star teams of 1933 and 1935. He finished with a record of 193 wins, 128 losses, 227 complete games, 17 shutouts, 13 saves, 985 strikeouts, with a 4.04 earned run average and was also a good pitcher with the bat hitting 38 home runs during his career. He died at age 68 in Sarasota, Florida. In February 2008, Ferrell was inducted to the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame.
