Moved to Ironton Missouri in 1856 with his family. He apprenticed as a printer under James Lindsay working for "The Ironton Furnace" newspaper. According to T P Russell's book and Fletcher's account, Eli was present and fought at the Battle of Pilot Knob. He served in the Union Army with the Iowa 1st Light Artillery from Aug 61 to Aug 64 as a musician. After the war he returned to Ironton in 1865 to start the newpaper called "The Ironton Forge" which then he sold a year later. Eli went to work for the "Iron County Register" in 1867. He became sole owner of this newspaper in 1871 and was its editor until shortly before his death which gave him the distinction of being the longest running editor of a newspaper in the country. His son Frank continued publishing the newspaper.
