U.S. Senator. Born in Montgomery County, Tennessee, he attended the Clarksville Academy, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1843 and opened a law practice in Clarksville, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1853 and during the Civil War, he was appointed Colonel in command of the 49th Tennessee Regiment, Confederate Army. After the war, he practiced law and was a member of the court of arbitration of Tennessee in 1874. In 1877, he was elected as a Democratic to the United States Senate, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Andrew Johnson serving until 1881. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he returned to the practice of law until his death at age 63.
