SHERIDAN – Elizabeth "Betty" Story Butterfield, age 89, of Sheridan, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Pleasant View in Ottawa.

Funeral services honoring her life will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at Gladfelter Funeral Home in Ottawa with Pastor Cynthia Zolk officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2011 at the funeral home with Eastern Star Rites at 4:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be friends and neighbors, Randy Rosengren, Jim Temple, John Duffy, Wayne Ketcham, Fred Barber, Steve Sampson,David Hall and her grandson, Samuel Denney. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Stinson and Richard Hance.

Betty was born June 15, 1922 in Carthage, Missouri, a daughter of Dr. Emery G. and Florence (Regan) Story. She married John C. Butterfield May 17, 1953 in Ottawa, Illinois. She is survived by John, her husband of 58 years; her children, John Butterfield, Jr. of Madison, TN, Kent (Marsha) Butterfield of Ottawa, David (Nicki) Butterfield of Sheridan, Dr. Mary Butterfield Denney of Nashville, TN, and Dr. Martha (Richard Hance) Butterfield of Brentwood, TN. She is also survived by grandchildren, Jennifer Gates, Laura Landers, Megan and Amanda Butterfield and Samuel and Katherine Denney. Betty also leaves nieces and nephews Dean (Susan) Hokanson, Monie (John) Thompson, Carol (Van) Short, Bob (Alicia) Story and Susan Mattingly; as well as numerous friends and caregivers at Park Manor in Nashville. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Captain E.G. Story of the United States Navy and two sisters, Mary Hokanson and Laura Jane Story.

Betty was born and raised in Carthage, Missouri, graduated from Carthage High School and Columbia School of Cosmetology. Betty represented the State of Missouri as a dancer at the Chicago World's Fair in 1933. She moved to Ottawa, Illinois in 1946. The passion of her life was caring for her family as a loving wife and mother. Betty was a member of the Harding United Methodist Church, Illini Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mary E. Chapter #70 Order of the Eastern Star, White Shrine of Jerusalem and the Harding United Methodist Women. Memorial contributions may be directed to the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution or to Abe's Garden at Park Manor, Nashville, TN.
