Professor Lewis Mobley, one of the best-known men in this part of the country, passed Thursday night at 1:40 at the home on Nineteenth and Cherry streets, Orinoco. Professor Mobley was well advanced in years, his seventy-second birthday having been on Sunday, January 19. Death results from an attack of pneumonia, which had it origin in grip with which he took sick about two weeks ago.
Lewis Mobley was born near Madison, Indiana, and while very young he was taken to Hartsville by his parents, who were early settlers in the county. Lewis attended the schools at Hartsville, and after having acquired a common school education, he taught in different parts of the county. He entered Hartsville College in 1864, working his way through by teaching in that institution. He graduated in 1870. He continued teaching at this place until 1880, occupying the chair of natural sciences.
In 1890 he came to Columbus, engaging in the real estate business, which he conducted up until his fatal illness. Professor Mobley was very prominent in church work in southern Indiana. When quite young, he affiliated with the United Brethren Church. He was probably better posted on the Bible and Bible study than any man in this part of the country. His whole heart was thrown into this particular work. He was a prominent figure in Sunday School conventions, and all such church work, and he will be greatly missed.
Mr. Mobley is survived by nine children: Darious A. Mobley, Stockton, California; Laura J. Funkhouser, Indianapolis; Luna J. Sisk, Indianapolis; Alta F. Wright, Waldron, Indiana; Minnie M. Howard, Indianapolis; Ora J. Mobley, Vincennes; Myrtle E. Prather, Indianapolis; Dana L. Mobley, Indianapolis; Blanche L. Mobley, Columbus. All are present excepting Darious.
Funeral services Saturday morning at 9 o'clock at the United Brethren Church, conducted by Rev. H. S. James, the present pastor, and Rev. L. O. Blake of Anderson, formerly of this charge. Burial at Hartsville College Cemetery.
Family Record
He was the son of John Lewis Mobley & Ruth Elder Davage. He married Julia Ann Rhorer on May 18, 1854.
