Lutheran musician and choral conductor. Founded the St. Olaf Choir, St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN in 1912 and lead it as choral conductor until 1944. He also served as the conductor for the St. Olaf Band, taking the ensemble on a tour of Norway in 1906, playing before King Haakon VII.

He was also an accomplished composer of music and his pioneering use of a cappella singing is a mark of his style.
