Hon, Cornelius Lynde was the son of John and Ruth Lynde, of Leicester, Mass., and was apprenticed in his youth to learn the clothier's trade, and served till twenty-one years of age; earned the means of getting an education and entered Harvard College. When the revolutionary struggle began he answered the call of his country; left his studies, entered the army and served through the war, attaining the rank of major. After the war he settled at Williamstown, Mass., and in 1786 removed to Williamstown, Vt.; was one of its original proprietors and settlers; laid out and allotted the land to his associates; was justice of the peace, and the first town clerk. In 1796 he built the first saw-mill in the town; was representative from 1791 to 1795; member of the State council 1794 to 1799; the first postmaster of the town; assistant justice of the county court 1797 and 1798. In 1800, at a meeting at his house, a Universalist society was formed, of which he was a prominent member. His wife was a woman of great worth and lovely character.
