W. R. DICKERSON DIED MONDAY NIGHT
Following Long Illness. Funeral Was Held On Wednesday Afternoon.
Warren R. Dickerson, 71, life-long citizen of Clinch County, died at his home here Monday night, following an extended illness. His passing, although a shock to his wide family connection, and many friends, was not unexpected. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Homerville Methodist Church, with Rev. Joe Bridges, of Thomasville, a former pastor, Rev. C. A. Morrison, pastor, and Rev. Edgar T. Davis, Baptist pastor, officiating.
The deceased was a son of the late David and Malinda Sirmans Dickerson, of this county. He was a former farmer and naval stores operator and was well-known throughout this section. He served in the legislature as Representative from Clinch County about twenty-five years ago, and was connected with the State Highway Department for twelve years. His widow, the former Miss Ida McGee, is Director of the Clinch County Welfare Department.
Mr. Dickerson was a grandson of Robert G. and Vicy Newbern Dickerson, the former having come to this county as a child after being born in South Carolina where his parents died; and they were among Clinch County's early settlers. One of their sons was David Dickerson who married Malinda Sirmans and they were parents of Warren R.
Mr. Dickerson's death leaves only one of the original Dickerson brothers still living viz (sic): Judge Marcus D. Dickerson, of Douglas, Ga. Other brothers having passed on are R. G. (Bob) Dickerson, Alapaha Judicial Circuit Judge; Walter T. Dickerson, local attorney and a County Court Solicitor; Fran Dickerson, a Clinch County sheriff; and Josiah S. Sirmans. A half-brother, William Roberts, of Savannah survives him. Also four sisters, viz: Mrs. J. S. Paulk of Adel, Mrs. W. B. Lankford of Waycross, Mrs. Will Lee of Willacoochee, and Mrs. L. C. Gillis of Akron, Ohio.
Also surviving, besides Mrs. Dickerson, is one daughter, Mrs. John (Aline) Norman of Homerville. A son W. R. Dickerson, Jr., died some years ago. Also surviving are three grandchildren, David, John F. and Lugenia Norman; and his stepfather, E. L. Roberts of Willacoochee.
Burial was in Pine Forest Cemetery here. Jernigan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
A large crowd of people gathered at the church to mourn his passing. Floral expressions of sympathy were beautiful and in profusion. Pallbearers were:
Active: George Peagler, G. C. Hughes, Jr., Grover Lee, T. C. Chambers Jr., Downing Musgrove, W. M. Tomlinson, I. D. Dickerson, J. P. Dickerson.
Honorary: D. B. Terry, T. D. Mitchell, Clarence Smith, Clarence Newton, G. C. Hughes, Sr., E. K. Avriett, J. Leviton, A. J. Gibbs, T. C. Chambers, Sr., Fred Blackledge, B. W. Harper Sr., A. I. Robbins, W. B. Walton, Sr., and W. B. Smith.
