The 5th Kentucky Infantry, initially recruited in Hager Hill, Kentucky, was organized October 21, 1861 at Prestonsburg, Kentucky and mustered in under the command of Colonel John Stuart Williams. The regiment saw action in eastern Kentucky early in the war serving in the Army of Eastern Kentucky under Brigadier General Humphrey Marshall. On October 20, 1862, Marshall disbanded the regiment in a field just outside Hazel Green, Ky. The remaining personnel were transferred to the 1st Kentucky Brigade (a.k.a. "The Orphan Brigade").

In the digital archives of the Library of Congress, The Big Sandy news., February 23, 1917, Page PAGE FOUR reported his death, referring to him as Col. William Musick. The item stated he died at his home at Cannonsburg [KY]"late Sunday afternoon," and that he was one of the wealthiest and best known men in the county. It notes he had suffered several months with cancer of the face and had been thought to have been getting better when he suddenly took a turn for the worse. His official death certificate gives the cause as sarcoma of the neck.

On the US Census records throughout his life, the earliest to mention his first wife, Isabel, shows them both as 16 years old. Later records always list her as 2-3 years younger. Their marriage endured till her passing in 1911. Records show he married two more times, first to a widow born Virginia B. Smith, apparently a very brief union. His final marriage was to widow born Sophia Bolt
