Hurricane, Utah - Jean Kendall Hinton, our much loved mother, age 95 years and 11 ½ months, passed away December 15, 2011. She was born January 3, 1916 in Nephi, Utah, the fourth of nine children to James Orthello and Athelia Haws Kendall.

Jean was raised in Nephi, graduated Utah State Agricultural College, Logan, Utah in 1937 and came to Hurricane in August 1937 to teach Home Economics at Hurricane High School. There she met another teacher, Wayne H. Hinton, and they were married June 9, 1939 in the Manti LDS Temple. When Wayne and Jean began their family, Jean left teaching to be a full time mother.

Jean bore six children: Dr. Wayne Kendall Hinton (Carolyn) of Cedar City, currently serving a mission at the Church History Library in Salt Lake City, Dr. Raymond Kay Hinton (Beverly) of Washington, Utah, Robert John (deceased), Lynn Bernard (deceased) (Linda Rawlinson), Margene (Alma) Holt of Hurricane, and Alan Clayton (deceased). As the children grew older, Jean returned to teaching, first in the elementary school and then at the high school where she taught physical education, reading and math.

Jean served in the Relief Society, Young Women and Primary. At age 92, she was still a visiting teacher coordinator in her ward Relief Society. For 20 years, she was an ordinance worker at the St. George LDS Temple where she served 13 years with her husband and then seven years after Wayne's death in 1990. She was also a long time member of the Alice Louise Reynolds literary club where she could meet many of her friends on a monthly basis.

When Wayne served two terms in the Utah State Legislature, Jean was the best support. Jean continued to support her husband as he served on the Hurricane City Council and then as mayor of Hurricane, and she always took great pleasure in her family and their many achievements.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, four sisters, her husband and three sons. She is survived by three children, 22 grandchildren, 91 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved and they all love her greatly for her love, charity, kindness and her many wonderful qualities and virtues.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Hurricane LDS 5th Ward Chapel, 274 South 100 West, Hurricane, Utah. Friends may call Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Hurricane Valley Mortuary, 140 North Main Street and on Tuesday, prior to services, from11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Chapel. Interment will follow at the Hurricane City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Hurricane Valley Mortuary, (435) 635-9922.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Hurricane Beehive Home for their tender and loving care and the Utah Hospice specialists for their care for Jean.
