Perry Hopkins was born in the Green Mountains of Vermont, the son of James Wilson Hopkins 1791-1873 & 2nd wife Philura Walcott 1794-1874. He is a brother of Wilson Hopkins also buried in O'Neil Cemetery.

Perry married Elvira Melinda Simons in Williamstown March 15, 1855. They had one child, John P. Hopkins born May 3, 1857. Shortly after Perry's service in the Civil War, they moved to Eagle Point (now Eagleton), Chippewa Co., WI where he opened an inn called Nine-Mile House to house the woodsmen in the lumber industry. He continued to be a hotel keeper the rest of his life. He was also proprietor of the blacksmith and wagon shop, employing a number of men. Perry was an avid prohibitionist and temperance worker and a member of the United Brethren Church.
