Henry Lester Groenenboom was born on September 23, 1924. He was the youngest of four children that were born to Arie and Helen Marie (Scharff) Groenenboom. He and Irma Mae Shinofield were introduced to each other by mutual friends and were united in marriage on March 31, 1946, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. To this union five children were born: Leslie Ann who was born on June 27, 1947 and died the next day, Gayle Lee who was born on January 6, 1949, Sally Ann on August 4, 1951, Mark Lester on May 11, 1957 and Scott David on November 29, 1959. Les and Irma began their married life farming south of Pella, Iowa. He then operated the Standard Oil Station and Bulk Truck in Pella. He was employed at Lee's Variety Store in Pella for 4 years and worked at the Rolscreen Company the last ten years of his working years. Les retired in 1986. He and Irma moved to Forsyth, Missouri in 1989. Les enjoyed fishing where ever he was and enjoyed collecting coins. In 2006 they returned to Iowa and Made their residence in Pleasantville, Iowa. On Tuesday evening, December 13, 2011, Les passed away at the Pleasant Care Living Center in Pleasantville at the age of 87 years.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of 65 years, Irma; three children and their families: Sally A. Noble of Ames, Iowa, and her two children, Dr. Gary Dean Bridges II.(Jodi)of Ames, and Angela McDermott(Lynn)of Appleton, Wisconsin. Mark L. Groenenboom of Otley, Iowa, and his two sons, Joshua Groenenboom and Jeffrey Groenenboom, Scott D. Groenenboom and his wife, Amy of Leighton, Iowa, and their two sons, Joseph(Serenty)Groenenboom and Samuel Groenenboom; a granddaughter, Rhonda(Bielema)Watkins; and nine great grandchildren. Also a brother-in-law Gilbert(Cornelia Groenenboom)Van Donselaar of Pella, Iowa. Les and Irma experienced not only the death of their infant daughter, Leslie Ann, but the untimely death of their second child, Gayle L(Steven J.)Bielema on June 3, 1982, at the young age of 33 years following a lengthy illness; a grandson, Steven Eric Bielema who died on April 17, 1974 at the age of two years; and a son-in-law, Tom Noble who died on July 26, 2006. Les was the last surviving member of his original family and was preceded in death by his parents, Arie and Helen Groenenboom; his two brothers and their wives: Arie William and Grace Groenenboom, Gysbert Henry and Roelofina Groenenboom and his sister, Cornelia Marie(Gilbert)Van Donselaar. Les and Irma were charter members of the Trinity Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa and at the present time were attending the Presbyterian Church.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 2 pm at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home, Pella, Iowa. Interment will be made in the Oakwood Cemetery at Pella, Iowa. Visitation will be Friday afternoon at the funeral home. Memorials in his memory may be given for a H. Lester Groenenboom Memorial Fund.
