COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A Richland County K9 deputy shot three times by a robbery suspect early Friday morning has died, according to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott.

A massive manhunt is still underway for an unknown man who deputies said robbed someone in the parking lot of Johnson's Store on Monticello Rd. early Friday morning.

As deputies chased the unknown suspect, a K9 deputy named Fargo caught up with the man and bit him. During the struggle deputies say the man shot the dog 3 times, deputies said. The suspect also fired shots at deputies and they returned fire. Sheriff Leon Lott says Fargo has died.

According to the Richland County Sheriff's Department website, K9 Fargo was a Belgian Malinois acquired by the department in 2006 at the early age of 9 months to begin his training. Fargo was trained in narcotics detection, tracking, and criminal apprehension.
